Vilsack: Investigate Pork Industry

December 2, 1998 / DES MOINES -- Iowa's Governor-elect Tom Vilsack wants to know why falling pork prices for farmers do NOT mean cheaper prices in the grocery store. The Mount Pleasant Democrat is calling for a federal investigation into the pork industry. Vilsack says federal officials are in the best position to look into the matter.

Hog Farmers Hit Cleveland Streets

December 3, 1998 / CLEVELAND -- Hog farmers are hitting the streets of downtown Cleveland this morning... giving away free pork sausage and coupons good for discounts on pork products. Farmers are suffering from near-record low market prices for pork... and say strong demand could help raise prices. The Ohio Farm Bureau says it costs farmers 40-cents-a-pound to raise hogs for market... but the current return price is just 15-cents-a-pound because of an oversupply of pork.
