Striking workers to vote 29 January 1999

TORONTO - More than 800 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Local 743 who work at Quality Meat Packers and Toronto Abattoirs are scheduled to vote this Friday 29 January 1999 on the company’s final offer.

The UFCW Local 743 Negotiating Committee, after careful consideration and given the state of the pork industry, is unanimously recommending acceptance. Bryan Neath, UFCW spokesperson, says the only likely result of membership rejection of this offer may be a plant closure.

“We know this has been an extremely difficult time for the members and their families,” says Neath. He hopes that the members, too, after careful consideration, will reach the same conclusion as the Negotiating Committee, determining that it is time to accept the offer, end the dispute, and now be able to plan for the future.
