QUALITY MEAT PACKERS AND UNION REACH AGREEMENT' TO END EIGHT-WEEK STRIKE

TORONTO, January 29, 1999 - Quality Meat Packers Ltd., Ltée today announced it has reached an agreement with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) to end an eight-week strike at the company's facilities.

"This strike has been tough on us all," said David Schwartz, President, Quality Meat Packers. "We're very glad it's over, and anxious to begin rebuilding relationships with our people, our customers and our suppliers. However, we still face a lot of challenges in getting back to where we were 8 weeks ago. We're going to need everyone to pull together."

Mr. Schwartz estimates that the two Quality Meat Packers facilities - Toronto and Bramalea locations - can be up and running within one week, reinstating over 950 jobs, and opening up a destination for 25,000 hogs per week to the beleaguered Ontario pork industry.

Quality Meat Packers Ltd, Ltée is a family-owned and operated business, founded in 1931 by Nathan Schwartz, President David Schwartz's grandfather, The company's two Toronto plants employ more than 950 people.
