We request that Ontario Pork not proceed any further with the recommendations of the Serecon Report. Neither Option A nor Option B are an adequate response to the needs of the industry today. At our think tank meeting on December 11 we unanimously adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS the Serecon report does not give a full list of options suitable
for independent family-worked farms, and
WHEREAS recent events in the industry have rendered the Serecon report
irrelevant in addressing the concerns of independent family-worked farms
BE IT RESOLVED
THAT the CFFO Pork Producers Committee reject the recommendations of the
Serecon report.
Earlier, at the same meeting, we also unanimously adopted the following:
WHEREAS hogs of equal quality should be paid an equal price, and
WHEREAS the marketplace has changed significantly since the closure of
Schneiders and Thorn Apple Valley, and
WHEREAS the recent strike at Quality Packers has displayed the perils to
producers of industry concentration among processors, and
WHEREAS a diversity of marketing options is undermining the original
concept of collective marketing powers,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
THAT the CFFO Executive Board ask Ontario Pork to ask the Farm Product
Marketing Commission to restore Ontario Pork as the sole seller of
Ontario hogs.
The CFFO Provincial Board supports this direction for the Ontario pork industry. At its November 18 meeting it unanimously adopted the following:
THAT the CFFO endorse the concept of one selling agency for Ontario's hogs and that the agency be empowered to be the sole deal-maker for the sale of all hogs.
